Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): The Basics

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is an evidence-based treatment that is collaborative and relatively short-term, with a focus on changing your relationship with your emotional experiences. DBT helps you finetune your life skills and apply them to daily life.  Our focus is to teach you behaviors that will set you up for the type of life you want to lead, a life worth living. We believe that  DBT therapy is used to empower our clients and help them realize that you can be the main author of your own story and life. 

At the beginning of treatment, our therapists conduct an assessment to really get to know the behaviors (behaviors from a DBT perspective include thoughts, actions and feelings) and situations of each client. We want to take an in-depth assessment of your behavioral patterns and will figure out with you what is needed to get you to your ultimate goals. Together we will decide what skills you need to work on to develop a more happy and meaningful life. 

When you begin a typical DBT session, clients will review a diary card which will help create an agenda of what will be covered in your session. This agenda is structured in a hierarchy from most important to less. 

Unlike typical therapy, your DBT therapist will even be available between sessions, to help you with situations that arise on a daily abscess. We will make sure that you have a system in place to set you up for success in the real world, too. 

Once you’ve identified with your therapist the skills you need to cope with emotional regulation, we will put this into practice. Practices like this will help move you towards your goals and help you adjust your strategies. Together you’ll identify what triggers your behavior, what thoughts and emotions you experience when triggered, and what reinforces your behavior or keeps it in place currently.
